Painthical
HOME WORKS ABOUT CONTACT
Painthical is a series of inclusive poems in English or Spanish and braille conceived to represent the content of famous classical paintings in a non-dogmatic interactive way.
Painthical does not aim to establish the objective, if any, substance of the work, but rather to present it poetically as an intermediate suggesting step before even looking at the real painting.
The collection of artworks replicates a private garden of natural creation, since the spectator, by reading the poem, creates an organic intellectual piece. That is the process of cognitive painting.
If the relationship between works of art (object) and spectators (subject) is traditionally presented as an objective immersion, that is to say, of the context of the work, Painthical places the spectator at the centre of the process.
The classical and unequal relationship between object and subject, by which the spectator relates to the work primarily from the institutional (technique, colour, material) and historical (authorship, date, commissioner) planes, disappears.
Painthical requilibrates this relationship and gives the spectator a voice in the cognitive configuration of the work, through the poems and graphic elements given. The project generates a bridge where both parties (object and subject) are empowered, from an egalitarian relationship between spectator (with or without visual disability) and work.
In pedagogical terms, this project offers a new methodology to increase the accessibility of artworks, from their poetic representation in ink and in braille, and printing on plastic supports. It's an alternative to pictorial labels whose information is brief and neutral, excluding people with visual disabilities from interaction and self-representation.
