All-Time Expats
HOME WORKS ABOUT CONTACT
All-time Expats is a collaborative photo-poetic project developed in 2020 during the pandemic. It aims to reflect on what it means to be an expat nowadays when freedom of movement is restricted both within and between countries. The characters are black American women of African origin. They migrated to the United States at different moments of their lives.
Interviews were done with each represented character. After the interview, the photographer Obinna Obioma took pictures in which the same person is represented more than once, aiming to visually depict the different cultural stages of someone while in one place.
All memories, feelings and reasons are visually intertwined in one scenario, to help the viewer understand the path of a migrant after he or she migrates. That is because the "vital trip" never ends.
Manuel composed the free-verse poems to lyrically represent the "soul" of the characters and to reinforce the identity of the composition by aligning verses in a non-structured way along the image, integrated within the photo.
